NFU-NAAF Internship Program
Overview
NFU is seeking an intern to assist with projects across our organization – in government relations, communications, education, and membership. This internship is integrated into the work of the organization and is focused on supporting the organization’s more than 230,000 members. In addition to learning directly from our national staff and leaders, NFU provides interns with the flexibility to tailor their internship to their interests.
This internship is offered through the generous support of the Native American Agriculture Fund (NAAF) to provide opportunities that empower young people to excel in agricultural careers. This program has flexible start and end dates, with a preferred timeframe that aligns with a standard summer academic semester – typically beginning near Memorial Day and concluding in mid-August or mid-September.
This is a hybrid position, with in-person work located in NFU’s national office in Washington, DC.
Qualifications
In general, ideal candidates should be enrolled in a degree program, or have recently completed a degree program, and possess a high level of organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, critical thinking skills, the confidence to work independently, and experience in timely research and information gathering. A background in production agriculture, agriculture policy, and knowledge of current political and policy issues facing farming and rural communities are a plus. Familiarity with Tribal Nations, Tribal Governance, and the unique legal, cultural, and economic contexts of Tribal communities is also highly valued in candidates.
Additional qualifications include:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Dedication to customer service when interacting with members via telephone or email and with visitors to the NFU office
- Proficiency in Microsoft programs, photo editing tools, and video-conferencing platforms
