Jess Bernstein is a brand new farmer. She grew up in Chicago with no farming or gardening experience, but came to gardening and permaculture via her love for good food. After a brief stint in software technical support and almost a decade of raising kids, homeschooling, and filling their yard with perennials, last year her family took an opportunity to move to an 80+ acre farm. With lots of help from a co-farmer and friends, they keep a small flock of heritage chickens and ducks, meat rabbits and four Gloucestershire Old Spot hogs and just planted 4.5 acres of fruit and nut trees and shrubs as part of a silvopasture research project partially funded by a SARE grant.
