Contact: 202-554-1600WASHINGTON (March 13, 2009) – The National Farmers Union Board of Directors Wednesday met with White House and administration officials to discuss the organization’s 2009 policy positions, approved by NFU’s membership Tuesday.
Topics of discussion included President Obama’s fiscal year 2010 budget proposal, expeditious implementation of the 2008 Farm Bill, the opportunities of expanded renewable energy production and agriculture’s role in being part of the solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“The effects of our nation’s struggling economy are being felt across the country. As America’s food producers are dealing with the bursting of the 2008 commodity bubble, rising input costs and credit challenges, the Obama Administration pledged its commitment to working in coordination with our nation’s farmers and ranchers,” NFU President Tom Buis said.
“The answers to today’s challenges are not inside the Washington beltway, but in the rural communities where Americans live, work and raise their families. President Obama shares that view and commitment to seeking the necessary solutions to turning our economy around,” Buis said.
