WASHINGTON (Sept. 26, 2008) – The House of Representatives passed a measure today that contains support for several energy provisions important to rural America.

The measure extends the production tax credit (PTC) for wind energy for one year, through Dec. 31, 2009; the biodiesel tax credit through 2009 and the alternative fueling credit, essential for E-85 infrastructure, through 2010.

NFU President Tom Buis said the energy tax provisions passed by the House are similar to those passed by the Senate on Wednesday. However, there are differences in how the tax package was presented and paid for that must be worked out between the two bodies.

“These provisions are too important to fail to reach a consensus,” Buis said. “Renewable energy production is a lifeline to rural communities but without action all the progress we have made will be significantly set back. It is imperative we break our addiction to foreign oil.”

Buis said that extending these renewable energy incentives was a top priority for the more than 150 farmers that recently visited Capitol Hill as part of the organization’s fall legislative fly-in.
