WASHINGTON (Sept. 24, 2008) - The U.S. Senate today passed an energy tax package that contains several provisions beneficial to rural America.

Specifically, the measure extends the production tax credit (PTC) for wind energy for one year, through Dec. 31, 2009. The biodiesel tax credit will be extended through 2009 and the alternative fueling credit, essential for E-85 infrastructure, through 2010.

National Farmers Union President Tom Buis commended Senators for extending these provisions.

“Part of the solution to our nation’s energy crisis is increasing the use and production of home-grown, renewable energy. Extending these incentives will allow us to move forward and continue developing alternative forms of energy,” Buis said.

Leaders in the House of Representatives have indicated they will take up the measure tomorrow. Buis urged the House to act quickly and called on the President to sign the measure into law.
