NFU Statement: WTO Negotiations
For Immediate Release: July 22, 2008
Contact: Liz Friedlander, 202-314-3191WASHINGTON (July 22, 2008) – National Farmers Union President Tom Buis made the following statement today in response to U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Susan Schwab’s move to cut American agriculture programs to reach a trade deal.
“I am not surprised that again the U.S. trade negotiators have unilaterally offered to trade away the interests of our nation’s farmers and ranchers. Time after time, during Doha Round negotiations, they have been willing to offer up American agriculture in exchange for getting a deal, without assurances that U.S. agriculture receive anything in return.
“Last week, we urged the president to not trade away American agriculture, and that no deal was better than a bad deal. Not surprisingly, that advice was ignored.”
