Contact: Liz Friedlander, 202-314-3191WASHINGTON (Feb. 13, 2007) – National Farmers Union announced today that U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson, D-Minn., will provide this year’s keynote address at the organization’s 106th annual convention March 2 in Las Vegas. Peterson will discuss the pending farm bill, fuels from the farm, and the opportunities and challenges confronting rural America.
New U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer and House Subcommittee on Agriculture Appropriations Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., will address convention attendees on March 3. DeLauro played a vital role in paving the way for implementing mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL).
“I am pleased to have Secretary Schafer and Chairmen Peterson and DeLauro join us for our annual convention. The convention is always an exciting event and this year will be no different,” NFU President Tom Buis said. “I am excited for Farmers Union members to hear firsthand from these exceptional leaders.”
“Both Peterson and DeLauro have been instrumental in passing legislation that will benefit family farmers, ranchers and consumers. While new to Washington, Schafer is no stranger to agriculture, having served as North Dakota governor,” Buis said.
Panel discussions on risk management, locally grown food, renewable energy and the media’s perspective on agriculture will take place throughout the day on Monday, March 3.
The convention convenes the evening of Sunday, March 2 and will adjourn, following policy consideration and development, and instillation of officers on Tuesday, March 4.
All members of the media are encouraged to attend. Click here for more convention information.
