NFU Urges Congress Support Renewable Energy Through Stimulus Package
For Immediate Release: January 24, 2008
Contact: 202-554-1600WASHINGTON (Jan. 24, 2008) – National Farmers Union President Tom Buis in a letter to Congressional leaders today urged inclusion of renewable energy tax incentives in the economic stimulus package to encourage continued growth of this critical renewable energy industry.
“Rural America has the greatest potential for generating significant amounts of clean, renewable energy from wind and biomass. Not only does renewable energy provide the opportunity for energy independence, but it provides a significant source of rural economic development,” Buis said.
The Production Tax Credit (PTC) is critical to the continued development of wind projects in rural America. It will expire at the end of this year. Buis urged Congress to include a short-term extension of the PTC in the stimulus package.
“While NFU supports making the credit permanent, a short term extension would meet the goals of a stimulus package by ensuring continued development of the renewable energy industry, helping decrease energy costs for consumers, and ensuring continued job growth in the renewable energy sector in rural communities,” Buis said.
