All States Camp Wrap-Up

With the 2008 All States Camp behind us, below are some thoughts from this year’s campers.

This year’s All-States Camp went really well. The speakers, activities, and day in Denver and Golden were all special in their own ways. The memories that I made with my friends will always stick with me. I’m so proud of how everybody talked and worked so well together. In my opinion, this was definitely the best group of campers and staff ever. (more…)

Members Corner: Don Bickel, Ohio Farmers Union

Curtis Bickel, 20, sat in front of his computer in 2006 remembering the conversation he had with his hunting buddy and father’s friend, Kurt Walterhouse, and Kurt’s sons Trae, Max and Shane. “I havent seen a buck all season,” Curtis had told Kurt after an unsuccessful day in the woods. “Why dont we just raise the deer on our own?”

“Yeah, why not?” thought Curtis, who began a serious look into the possibility of a deer farm. After researching on the Internet, Curtis gathered together Kurt and his father, Don Bickel, to lay out his plan for a whitetail deer farm. “When you put pen to paper; the economics work really well,” he explained to Kurt. To his father, Curtis said: “This is a way to diversify our family farm operation.” (more…)

Members Corner: Jason Frerichs, South Dakota Farmers Union

Between college graduation, farming, managing his own cow/calf herd, teaching at Lake Area Technical Institute and running for a House seat in the South Dakota legislature, fourth generation farmer and lifelong South Dakota Farmers Union member Jason Frerichs has been extremely busy.

Jason became active in Farmers Union following the 2002 state conference in Spearfish, S.D. “I found so many opportunities for young people such as myself to get involved in Farmers Union and agriculture, and really took advantage of available resources,” he said. Since that time Jason has attended national conventions in Denver and Billings and a fly-in to Washington D.C. in 2005. (more…)
