Each summer, Farmers Union members, ages 17-22, who have distinguished themselves as leaders are given the opportunity to attend All-States Leadership Camp. Campers come from throughout the United States and meet in Baily, Colo., where they spend a week at the NFU Education Center in the Rocky Mountains.
July 8–13 2007, a group of 80 young leaders attended NFU’s All-States Leadership Camp, learning to “eat fresh” and “buy local.”
On Sunday, the campers got to know one another while beginning the operations of their very own co-op run store, helping the young adults understand and weigh the differences between a global, industrialized food system and a local, sustainable food system.
Throughout the rest of the week, the 2007 National Youth Advisory Council (NYAC) led group discussions on how the food we eat impacts our health, the environment, local economies and communities; the importance of working together to accomplish common goals; the “cooperative difference” as a business model; and how each participant can make a difference in their organization and the world around them.
After spending the week holding group discussions, listening to guest speakers and learning how food choices can impact health, environment, economy and community, campers disbanded their cooperative store and decided to donate the proceeds to an education fund that will send a camper to the NFU Legislative Fly-In this fall.
The camp concluded with the appointment of the new 2008 NYAC. The 2008 NYAC will represent their peers at the 2008 NFU Convention and the 2008 All-States Leadership Camp.
